What
Java's Machine: Phantasmagoriais the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong of Indonesian artist Augustinus Kuswidananto (a.k.a. Jompet). Jompet's work takes, as its starting point, the history of Java and explores syncretism or strategies to reconcile dispersed and disparate points of reference in Java's cultural history. This is exemplified by Java, the War of Ghosts, the centrepiece of the exhibition, which also, in turn, frames the other installations and video works in the exhibition. Jompet's work can be read as a discourse on post-colonialism and globalisation, a celebration of unruly beauty. As with Java's heritage, harmony can be negotiated in the multiplicity of patches that make up today's global community.
Jompet was born in 1976 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He graduated from Gadjah Mada University in 1999 with a degree in Social and Political Science. His multi-disciplinary practice involves installation, video, performance and music, delving into a wide range of subjects such as history and civilisation, the past and modernity, and technology and the spiritual realm. His work has been exhibited in many international exhibitions including Asia Art Award, Seoul, South Korea (2010), Oasis To Be, Bali (2010), Jakarta Biennale, Jakarta, Indonesia (2009), 10th Lyon Biennale, Lyon, France (2009), Beyond the Dutch, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Netherlands (2009), Yokohama Triennale, Yokohama, Japan (2008) and Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, Fukuoka, Japan (2005).

Moon Gallery proudly presents ‘Message In The Sky – Eddie Lui’s Art from 1997 to 2010’, a solo exhibition featuring a series of works from the period of 1997 to 2010 by one of the most internationally respected and well known Hong Kong artists Eddie Lui.
In Lui’s artistic career of over four decades, Lui’s paintings, prints and three-dimensional works have been featured in renowned establishments. His works are widely exhibited around Asia and included in an array of museum, private, corporate and public collections.
In 2010, Lui decided to leave the demanding work of Executive Director of the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC) and focus on his creative work. ‘Message In The Sky – Eddie Lui’s Art from 1997 to 2010’ exhibition is not only a retrospective of Lui’s work for the past 13 years. It also marks a new beginning of Lui’s total commitment in creating artwork. This exhibition will showcase Lui’s oil paintings, contemporary ink paintings and the special ‘stone’ works.
This is a very rare occasion where Hong Kong audiences can get a close look at the works of a true master artist from Hong Kong. This is an exhibition surely not to be missed.

Blindspot Gallery presents the second part of its trilogy exhibition - “A Departure from Reality II: City Fable” featuring Hong Kong artists, Ng Sai Kit and Lai Lon Hin. Both artists take Hong Kong landscape as their subject. With acute observation of their home city, Ng and Lai capture the exceptional sides out of the ordinary scenes of the city through their subjective lenses. Both point their lenses to Hong Kong landscape, Ng’s vertical black and white photographs of day scene and Lai’s colour photographs of night scene exude completely different styles that translate into different visual experiences of the viewers. With their unique interpretations, the ‘fable’ of our city is unfolded.

What
Mario's life began in 1981 as the main character Jumpman in cult game Donkey Kong, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and originally named Mr. Video for planned recurring roles in multiple games. However, he was renamed Mario after the landlord of Nintendo’s US warehouse, Mario Segale, whom they owed rent to and resembled the character -- a move Miyamoto said saved the character from disappearing off the face of the earth. As the most famous videogame star, Mario has appeared in countless computer/TV games, TV series, cartoons, animated films and comic books with worldwide distribution. With his famous cap and mustache that were in fact specifically designed to cover up graphical limitations of animating hair and facial expressions back in the day, there is no doubt the pudgy plumber from Super Mario Bros serves as a legendary icon of video games all over the world.
Taking time to recall a familiar sight from our daily lives: people playing hand-held games everywhere -- it's reached the point where those mini-machines are in fact playing with us, or even playing us. They serve as a universal communication hub, dragging us into the virtual world, where the question of "reality" is a constant debate -- how, why and when have we become so addicted to it?
People often speak of art as an unreachable realm; but if we looked at art through video games, what we could we see? Through this project – MARIO VIVA – Microwave would like to use this iconic game character as a starter for the public to taste the fun of interactive media artworks, and at the same time, explore the social and cultural phenomenon that runs deep in our society today.

The Upper Station
No. 22 Upper Station Street
Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
What
The Upper Station (photo gallery)

What
Grotto Fine Art takes great pleasure in presenting Kevin Lik-yan Fung's first one-man exhibition at our gallery Caught in the Middle . One of most accomplished Hong Kong artists, Fung's iconic wooden sculpture captivates the audience with its fine craftsmanship and profound concerns with the bourgeoisie experiences in Hong Kong.
On display will be a body of works in wood and bronze that defines the latest creative journey of the artist.
As the title suggests, Kevin Fung's new exhibition deals directly with middle class experiences and situations in Hong Kong. Scenes of Hong Kong's streets, the MTR, bus stops and shopping centres are represented by Fung's iconic figures. Broadly carved and lightly colored, they are expressionless and remote. They do not point to a specific individual or profession; instead, they are the collective manifestations of the general populace, the mass. Heavily rooted in their columnist bases, each figure appears pressed down by a psychological burden. Such quiet tension defines Fung's best work. It addresses the stress and pressure in our daily life while offers a touch of humanity and humor. Fung's figures are the urban heroes that transcend time and space.
Born in Hong Kong in 1964, Kevin Fung received his tertiary education in Canada and now works as engineer in the telecommunication industry. Fung's works concern the customs and predicament from the bourgeoisie in Hong Kong. Fung has been involved in numerous exhibitions locally and abroad and his works are collected by private collectors, institutes, and museums and have been featured in Contemporary Asian Art in Sotheby's.

Reach for the HeART was a programme initiated by Art in Hospital and Sin Sin Fine Art in 2009 which would like to benefit chronic geriatric patients in hospitals. We believe that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviour, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight. The process of art making could also bring joy and fulfillment to participated patients.
With the funding support in 2009, over 31 workshops were held in 4 hospitals namely Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Caritas Medical Centre, Haven of Hope Hospital and Grantham Hospital for geriatric patients. We are now looking for the support to sustain this meaningful project.

What
Goethe-Institut Hongkong and Edith Russ Site for Media Art in Oldenburg, Germany jointly present, in collaboration with Hong Kong Film Archive, the exhibition ‘Culture(s) of Copy’, a follow-up exhibition of the Institut’s ‘History Will Repeat Itself - Strategies of re-enactment in contemporary (media) art and performance’ (curated by KW Kunstwerke, Berlin, and Hartware, Dortmund) in 2008 and an earlier study of the Asian concept of ‘copy’, which was presented in the photo exhibition ‘Chinese Copy Art’ by Michael Wolf in 2007 at the Goethe-Institut Hongkong.
The exhibition ‘Culture(s) of Copy’ initiates from the exhibition that the Goethe-Institut Hongkong presented two years ago under the title ‘History Will Repeat Itself’. As that exhibition took a Western approach, we had in mind to follow up the topic with an exhibition from a perspective that involves Asia. It became clear that the term REPEAT should translate into COPY. ‘Culture(s) of Copy’ is about the phenomenon of the copy as a global cultural strategy. The discussion of intellectual property, as it has already been treated in diverse ways, is only one angle from which one can approach the topic. The ‘copy’ here is understood positively as a remake, a cultural translation and an achievement (“You have to copy a master to become a master”, “The best way to appreciate a master is to copy him”). The phenomenon of the copy is seen as a rewarding opportunity to understand and reflect on cultural differences beyond the rather poor terms of a dichotomy of East and West.
The works presented can be divided into different topics (’Archive’, ‘Theme Park’, ‘Claim of authenticity by media represented reality’, etc.). Some works use the stocks of art history. Existing artefacts of the economy or art are treated as an archive that one can make use of. The repetition of known formats and content is not for the sake of repetition, but for the sake of a new definition. The maxim of originality is thereby deliberately ignored – in the age of “copy and paste”, the creation of the NEW is bound by repetition, variation and cultural translation. Other themes include the process of copying itself and the relationship between context and content. Many of the works deal with the question of authenticity in a world in which reality is mediated mainly through the mass media.
Interestingly, languages are no exception. They don’t deliver what they are supposed to do: to find a title for this exhibition that is applicable to both the English language as well as the Chinese language proved to be nearly impossible. Words don’t copy, they translate.
The exhibition will later in the year be shown at Edith Russ Site for Media Art in Oldenburg, Germany from November 27, 2010 – February 2011.

What
Goethe-Institut Hongkong and Edith Russ Site for Media Art in Oldenburg, Germany jointly present, in collaboration with Hong Kong Film Archive, the exhibition ‘Culture(s) of Copy’, a follow-up exhibition of the Institut’s ‘History Will Repeat Itself - Strategies of re-enactment in contemporary (media) art and performance’ (curated by KW Kunstwerke, Berlin, and Hartware, Dortmund) in 2008 and an earlier study of the Asian concept of ‘copy’, which was presented in the photo exhibition ‘Chinese Copy Art’ by Michael Wolf in 2007 at the Goethe-Institut Hongkong.

What
